Description:The Minute Book of the Asia Minor Railway Scheme states that the purpose of the Committee was ‘urging the best method for uniting Europe with British India by a direct line of Railway through Asia Minor with a Branch to the Mediterranean’. In the Committee’s out-letters, a document entitled ‘Memorandum’ concerning the ‘Asia Minor and Euphrates Railway’ outlines the advantages of the scheme as ‘the best means of developing the resources of Asiatic Turkey and of promoting the Establishment of good Governance in that country’, adding ‘Its commercial and political advantages may briefly be summarised as uniting our interests with those of a country in whose progress and independence England is vitally concerned’.
