Description:One article which survives in scrapbooks in the Sutherland Papers features an appeal by the Duke of Sutherland promoting the work of the Stafford House Committee, particularly their scheme to support English soldiers fighting in South Africa. The appeal states: ‘Our army in South Africa seems indeed to be in imminent want of all that their countryman can send to their aid. I am sure the Government are making every exertion, but in all wars of recent times volunteer succour has proved welcome and efficacious in supplementing the official efforts.’ The Duke added: ‘Help, though too late to save many valuable lives, will still be useful, and it is to be hoped that subscriptions will be raised to do for our own soldiers what was so well and generously done for others’.
