Date:4th of June 1879

Description:The image above shows the leading article of the Morning Post for Wednesday June 4th 1879. The article expresses the need for a Committee to be established to raise money for overseas aid. The article states:

‘It is, therefore, high time that those who did such wonders in the Turkish war, who treated tens and thousands of cases and saved thousands of lives, should do something for Englishmen…We therefore, confidently make our appeal to our countrymen to come forward and aid in the good work.’

The article appeals directly for a Committee to come forward, suggesting that it was popular public opinion that voluntary aid was needed in South Africa.
