Description:An account by a Dr. McIvor describes an incident involving Hassan Hussein, a Corporal in the Turkish army, who was ‘admitted to Stafford House Hospital October 9th’:

‘On the 17th Sept. he was wounded inside Fort St. Nicholas the greater part of his elbow and arm being carried off…Captain (now Colonel) Campbell the officer who commanded the storming party, while retreating saw the poor fellow and, taking pity on him, hoisted him in to his shoulders and thus carried him to the English hospital, a distance of half a mile, where immediate amputation was deemed necessary, and accordingly performed’.

Accounts like these reflect the importance of the Stafford House Committee's work in providing medical supplies.
