Date:21st of May 1877
Description:The Morning Post for the 21st May 1877 included a copy of a letter from the Duke of Sutherland addressed to the Editor of the newspaper. The Duke informs the editor that owing to subscriptions: ‘We have been able to distribute as gifts from Englishmen, and in no small part from English soldiers (former comrades), medicines, surgical instruments, and warm clothing to the value of £5,600.’ The Duke encourages further donations, appealing again to a sense of English patriotism through benevolence. He refers ‘to that feeling of charity which has always distinguished this country, and has so often proved that Englishmen are ever ready to respond to the cry of the distressed, from whatever quarter it may come’.
