Description:Another letter addressed to Sir William from the Yorkshire deacon Reverend George Plaxton, a close associate of the Leveson-Gower family, concerns management of the Gower estates in Stittenham. A close associate and advisor to the Leveson-Gower family, Plaxton refers to a dispute between tenants on the Estate. He advises Sir William ‘I pray be very cautious and circumspect in your matters’, writing that ‘John Lacon, and Rymer with their Bayliffe, are seling forward, they have all their consultations and…have now made all the But-Town freeholdes…at New Malton’. He adds ‘although they be Landlords of small freeholds in that town our friends complain of great injustice and oppression and doe intend to seek redresse from the Deputy Leuetenants’.

Plaxton’s letter tells us about the kind of issues which concerned landlords and tenants at this time. In addition to reporting on incidents concerning rights over land, his letter refers to ‘county affairs’ and the importance of ‘seed time’.

These letters demonstrate the active role which Sir William took in the management of his estates in Yorkshire.
