Date:13th of February 1671

Description:A letter from the Earl of Bath dated February 1671 indicates that the baby of Sir William Leveson-Gower (1636-1691) his wife Lady Jane had been born, making Sir Thomas Gower and Jane's father the 1st Earl of Bath Grandfathers. The letter above was sent by the Earl to Sir Thomas following the happy event.

The Earl concludes his letter to Sir Thomas stating ‘give mee now leave to rejoyce with you and my wife doth the like for the safe delivery of our daughter of our pretty Grandchild whom wee beseech God to blesse & wish much joy of her’. It is evident that the baby was a girl, the Earl noting ‘hoping the next will be a boy and as fortunate as his father for the establishment of his family and estate’. Although they were happy about the birth of their baby grandaughter, the letter suggests that both the Earl and Sir Thomas, like many wealthy families with property, were concerned that they would have grandsons. Grandsons would inherit the family's lands and ensure the continuation of the family’s name and lineage.
