Description:In another letter dated 15th March 1671 Sir Thomas advises William about his health. Sir Thomas writes: ‘I am sorry to heare of your cold & sore throte’ adding ‘while either last, you must forbeare wine (as much as may be) especially when you are in London, whose aire, either in hott or colde weather hath an antipathy to your constitution’. The personal detail in this letter tells us a great deal about contemporary perceptions. The letter suggests that London was perceived as having an unhealthy ‘aire’ during the late seventeenth century, reflecting concerns over air pollution which remain current today.
