Description:Following events in Hull, another letter discusses the tactics of Sir John Hotham, the Parliamentarian army officer who oversaw the Parliamentarian occupation of Hull. Gower writes ‘this unfortunate country is still the sceane of trouble, Mr Hotham is issued out of Hull with 1000 foot, and 2 troops of horse…and many of the Country is ioyned to him…he will much trouble us, by beinge master of the water whereby he can take and leave when he pleaseth’. As is evident from these brief extracts, Sir Thomas Gower’s letters are extremely valuable for learning about Civil War history, providing firsthand accounts of events as they were perceived by a contemporary.
