Description:One of the cuttings at the beginning of the scrapbook is from The Evening News dated Tuesday 4th August 1914, which boasts the headline ‘British Ultimatum to Germany’. The article reports that following Germany’s declaration of war on Belgium, England would join the war and ‘guard the north and west coasts of France against hostile attack and uphold the neutrality of Belgium with all the means in our power’. Written in a patriotic tone, the article reports on the support of Irish and also Australian troops, reflecting ‘that the Empire is behind us, and that wide as our dominions are our hearts beat together all the world over’.
