Description:The correspondence received by Duchess Millicent reflects that the Hospital was viewed with high esteem by the medical authorities. A letter from the Director General of the Medical Services for the British Armies in France writes: ‘Of the many voluntary hospitals organised during the war none have been longer in existence than the Millicent Sutherland Ambulance, and certainly none have excelled, while few have equalled the skill, devotion and comfort extended to the wounded.’

After the war Duchess Millicent returned to civilian life. She produced a final report on the Unit’s work which indicated that between 1914 and 1918 about 8,000 men were treated at the hospital, 2,000 of which were French and Belgian and 6,000 who were British. For her work the Duchess was awarded the British Royal Red Cross. She also received the Belgian Royal Red Cross and the French Croix de Guerre.
