Description:The Sutherland Papers Collection includes the Visitors Book which was kept at No. 9 Red Cross Hospital and travelled with the Unit from it’s first days as a Tent Hospital at Bourbourg. The Visitor’s Book contains the signatures of a huge variety of international visitors, including men from the Grenadier Guards, Scots Guards, Irish Guards and also prestigious visitors such as the Prime minister Herbert Asquith who visited the Unit on 6th August 1915. There are signatures indicating that the Hospital was visited by the President of the Canadian Red Cross Society, and by personnel from international Ambulance units from American and Australia.

The Visitor’s book also contains the signatures of King George V, Queen Mary and Prince Edward commemorating their visit to the Hospital on 14th July 1917. The signatures of representatives from the Associated Press of America, the United Press of America and the Daily Chronicle, and also the signatures of personnel from British Intelligence GHQ indicate that the visit by the King was a significant public event.

King George V’s visit to No. 9 Red Cross Hospital is commemorated in the press photographs which survive in the Sutherland Papers Collection.
