Description:One of the Earl of Essex’s responsibilities as Lieutenant of Staffordshire and the City of Lichfield was to nominate persons to be appointed as Deputy Lieutenant. In a Commission attached to his appointment as Lieutenant, Essex states that ‘you Sir Richard Leveson Knight of the Bath (amongst others) have byn by me nominated to be one of my deputie Leiuetenauntes of the said Countie of Stafford and the Countie of the Cittie of Litchfeild’.

Sir Richard Leveson (1598-1661) would be responsible for assembling troops ‘for the Suppression of all Rebellious Insurrecons’ in Lichfield, Staffordshire and beyond.
