Description:When voters attended the poll to cast their votes they were required to give an oath that they had not been bribed to vote for a particular candidate. Goodwin refers to a man named William Smith who was ‘so very much intoxicated’ that he was ‘incapable of giving a reasonable answer’. Goodwin remarks ‘it was shocking to see a man in such a condition take any Oath’.
