Description:A further letter from Lady Katherine refers to the practical arrangements for the engagement/wedding ceremony. It is evident that Sir Richard had written to Katherine about arranging an appropriate time for the ceremony. Katherine replies ‘You better knowing your one ocasionse of bussines then I doe, and therefore may best apoynt a surtin time as shall bee most convenient for yourselfe’. She adds significantly ‘and whensoever you doe com you shall find me redy by my deedes to performe whot I have manyfest by words’. Katherine’s letter also includes details about the number of guests. She writes that it is Sir Richard’s decision as to the ‘maner eather to have it publik or private which is best to your Likeing’, but adds that ‘for my part I think it cannot bee to private’. She concludes however, ‘but it must bee as you please and whot frinds you intent to bring with your self bee most wellcom’

The detail in Katherine’s letters provides a wealth of information about the practical rituals and arrangements which formed part of the Early Modern courtship process. Her comments on the types of gifts which it was suitable to exchange, and the ‘maner’ of ceremony to have tell us a great deal about preparations for marriage in the early seventeenth century.
