Description:Katherine’s letters to Sir Richard suggest that there was some controversy over their marriage. In one letter she notes: ‘I marvell what people those bee that delightes so much to meddell with that which so littell consarnes them, as I find they doe (on both sides,) and trubbles your eares which I am the most sorry for’. She writes in a further letter ‘I hope you will grant, and consither there is no Love but a littell occasion will cause a greate deale of feare’. The letter indicates that the ‘consarnes’ about their marriage related to Lady Katherine’s financial situation. Her reply to a letter from Sir Richard suggests that Sir Richard had heard that Katherine was very wealthy, a claim which she denies, writing ‘I wish I had such greate treasures as might make theare words carry sum show of truth, for as it is they speake rather very idely or by the contraries’. It is significant that Sir Richard had written about these concerns to Katherine. Could he have been trying to discover how wealthy his potential bride actually was?
