Date:28th of April 1656

Description:In another letter to the Countess dated 28th April 1656 and written from Trentham, Sir Richard notes that ‘my correspondence at London is nowe soe sparing, & the condition of these times soe extremely deformed, that I cannot observe the duties of ordinance civily to my honord frendes’.

Sir Richard’s contempt for the changes wrought by the Civil War are evident where he describes ‘these times’ as ‘extremely deformed’. In just a few lines the reader gains a significant insight into Sir Richard’s perceptions of the world.
