Date:20th of April 1642

Description:In a letter dated 20th April 1642 Francis writes to Sir Richard about a ‘matter worth your knowinge’. He writes ‘the kinge went on Saturday last to Hull well attended & would have entered into the Towne, Sir John Hotham denyed him, then he offerd to enter onely with 30 men as few as he could with his dignitye that Hotham denyed too, expostulatinge with the Kinge upon the Walls a longe tyme, upon this the Kinge went backe to Yorke, & sent a message to the Parl[iamen]t consistinge of the relation of this passage tellinge us that he had proclamd Hotham a Traytor’.

Francis states that he sent Hotham two thousand pounds to ‘pay his Garisson’, indicating that he was still associated with the Parliamentarians. However, his letters describe events neutrally, noting at the conclusion of the account above that ‘One party is much depressed at this newse, & the other as much set higher’. In addition, by informing Royalist Sir Richard Leveson of the news, Francis is perhaps demonstrating his sympathy for the Royalist cause.
