Description:In addition to the land which is bequeathed to her, Richard also leaves ‘corne and heye’ to his wife Mary and also ‘halfe of my plate and householdes stuffe as yt standyth’. He also leaves Mary ‘money and cattel’.

Richard Leveson’s wealth is apparent in the bequests which he makes to his son Walter. The will states that when Walter reached the age of 21 he was to receave his father’s ‘cheyne of golde with my gold rynge’. Richard also leaves Walter his ‘sygnet ring’ and ‘my rynge set with Dyamonds’. In addition to his extensive property, Richard also owned numerous pieces of jewellery.

Richard Leveson’s will deals very intricately with land rights compared to the wills of his predecessors. Indeed, the prominence of land in Richard’s will is evident when comparing the document with his father James Leveson’s will. This indicates the growth of the Leveson family’s lands, and reflects again the concern amongst gentry families at this time that land was passed down to the next generations of their family, ensuring the Leveson family's lineage.
