Date:30th of April 1846
Description:A further letter from William Lewis, dated 30th April 1846 tells us about the history of Penn Work House. Following his investigation, Lewis had discovered that the Duke of Sutherland had no claim on the Poor House which had been 'sold' and 'resold' numerous times in its sixty year history. Lewis writes 'about 30 years ago the then owner fell into difficulties the Parish advanced him money and about that period it became the property of the Parishioners and has ever since remained'. Lewis notes that 'the bulk of the inhabitants' wished to retain the Poor House, however, a number of the 'Guardians' were 'disposed to sell the house'. He adds at the conclusion of his letter that the building was in 'a ruinous dilapidated state' and was 'of little value'.
