Date:January 1588

Description:In a similar commission dated January 1588, Sir John Norris and Sir Francis Drake petition for ‘one hundred voluntary men to be under our leading’ for ‘her Majesties Services’.

Documents such as the one above were produced only months before the outbreak of military conflict, reflecting the increasing threat of Spanish invasion. The ‘speede’ required to put trained forces from all over the country ‘in a readinesse to be imploied’ reflects the pervading fear of imminent foreigh invasion during this period.
