Date:2nd of March 1820
Description:William Lewis was also heavily involved in the 1820 County Election campaign. In his letter featured above he pledges his ‘utmost endeavours’ to ensure a ‘respectable attendance’ at the election. In addition to the responsibilities to tenants on the Leveson-Gower estates which he writes of, Lewis canvassed in Lichfield and Wolverhampton. Troubled by ‘animosity and contention’ amongst tenants, and the controversy caused by a ‘talking fool’, Lewis’s letter provides an insight into the work of Lord Gower's agents in the 1820 election campaign.
