Description:Terricke experienced difficulties finding a cook for Trentham Hall in time for Christmas. A further letter informs Sir Richard that ‘the towne is full of nobility & gentry, & many of them want’ meaning that cooks were ‘hard to gette’. Terricke was worried about the matter, and promised Sir Richard ‘I will nott Rest till I have gott one’. The letter featured above also refers to the administration of Charles II who had recently been crowned the English monarch. During the interregnum Parliament had severely restricted royal privileges and when Charles was crowned King he was forced to fund his administration using customs taxes. Terricke’s letter informs Sir Richard that Parliament had ‘vootted that halfe of the excise for beare; ale; Perry; Sider & stronge waters shuld be settled upon his Majesty’.
