Description:Amongst her correspondence with Queen Victoria are letters dated January 1870 from the Queen offering Anne the role of Mistress of the Robes and relating to Anne’s acceptance of the post. Reflecting her closeness to Duchess Harriet and her family, Queen Victoria writes that ‘the sad illness of dear Elizabeth Argyle has obliged her to resign her high office in my Household, which I need not say is a great sorrow to me’. She continues ‘under these circumstances, I thought of you, her sister-in-law - & the daughter–in law of my dear & ever lamented friend, - whom I have now, for long had the pleasure of knowing’. The Queen concludes her letter by formally offering Anne the post: ‘I therefore offer you the office of Mistress of the Robes which I hope you will accept.’ Reflecting her loyalty to Duchess Harriet’s family, the Queen comments that ‘it would be a comfort to me to have one about me so nearly connected with her whom I must part with’ Click on the image on the left to read Anne’s response to the Queen’s letter.
