Date:1849

Description:The image above shows a document taken from the sales papers relating to the purchase of ‘The Manor of Clifden’ by the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland in 1849.

The document tells us that the Manor included ‘the Northern portion of the beautiful grounds of Taplow’, and also the ‘renowned springs & ornamental fishing villa’ on the River Thames.

The sales papers tell us that the ‘ornamental fishing villa’ was unfinished, but was ‘planned to contain Drawing and Dining Rooms’ and also a library. The villa already had a complete suite of bedrooms.

Additional notes feature above the description of the lands which came with the Manor of Cliveden, stating that ‘the additions are in the Gothic Style, of great Elegance of Elevation’. The document tells us that the ‘romantic and beautiful position’ of Cliveden ‘renders this Property almost unequalled’.

The Parcels of land attached to the Manor included gardens, cottages, and an orchard. Cliveden also came with ‘the free and exclusive right of Fishing in a portion of the River Thames’.
