Date:1838
Description:The notes on the Wyatt vs. Sutherland case include a letter from the Duke’s Chief Agent James Loch which was sent to the Duke with further details about payments owed to Wyatt. Loch had calculated Wyatt’s bill against the amount paid by the Duke to the architect Sir Robert Smirke who had been the chief architect involved in work on Stafford House alongside Wyatt. Loch writes ‘Wyatt has received £3100 which is more than he would have had if he had been the Architect’. He remarks ‘I do not see how he has any further demand on your Grace’. Legal papers included in the case notes suggest that there was no explicit agreement made with Wyatt regarding costs and the credit owed to him for using his designs. Wyatt won his case against the Duke of Sutherland and was awarded the sum of £1772, 14s, 11d. John Martin Johnson remarks that although Wyatt won the case, this ‘effectively marked the end of his architectural career’.
