Date:26th of April 1834

Description:Wyatt was employed alongside the architect Sir Robert Smirke to complete Stafford House. Letters in the Sutherland Papers reveal that Wyatt reacted to this decision with ‘mortification & regret’ but thanked the Duke ‘for the portion of confidence’ conferred on him.

Later letters from Wyatt refer to amended plans for the design of Stafford House. These letters include much detail about the interior design of the property.

On 26th April 1834 Wyatt wrote to the Duke regarding ‘a sketch of two or three modes of altering the straight lines…in the Cove of the great south Drawing Room’, to which the Duke and Duchess had ‘made some objection’.
The sketches included ‘a drawing of the south side of the Dining Room’ which showed ‘a door similar to those proposed for the Gallery, with the Corinthian Pillasters on each side’.
