Date:1763

Description:A further letter dated 1763 which was sent by Earl Gower ‘to his Majestys Justices of Peace’ at the Stafford Quarter Sessions indicates that the Lieutenants of Staffordshire had a problem in appointing Officers to oversee the Militia.

The letter informs the Justices that ‘the Militia for the County of Stafford has not been raised’, explaining that ‘a sufficient number of persons Qualify’d to act as Officers therein did not tender themselves to accept commissions in that service’.
