Description:As Lord Lieutenant for Staffordshire, Earl Gower’s responsibilities over the Staffordshire Militia included appointing suitable officers.

A letter dated 18th December 1759 refers to an Act of Parliament which had been passed ‘to enable the Lord Lieutenants…to summon a meeting of all persons Qualified and willing to serve as Officers in the Militia’.

Earl Gower requests that all men suitably qualified ‘and willing to accept Commissions therein, are desired to meet at the Saracens Head in Stafford on Monday the 31st day of December’. The meeting was arranged to enable the men to ‘deliver his name in writing to his Majesty’s Lieutenant…specifying the Rank in which he is willing to serve’.
