Description:As Lord Lieutenant of the County, Granville was responsible for selecting and appointing gentlemen to be Deputy Lieutenants in Staffordshire. A document dated 20th August 1761 lists nearly sixty names of men to be appointed as Deputy Lieutenants. The document is signed by William Pitt, the first Earl of Chatham, who would later serve as Prime minister. The documents states ‘His Majesty does very well approve of the Persons following to be Deputy Lieutenants for the County of Stafford’. Following the list is written ‘the Right Honourable Earl Gower, Lieutenant for the County of Stafford is to issue out their Deputations accordingly’.
