Description:During investigations into Francis and Elizabeth's secret marriage, William Brooke, Lord Cobham, interrogated servants in his own household and also those who served Francis's Uncle, Ambrose Coppinger. John Punter was a baker who worked in Lord Cobham’s household. Punter was suspected of involvement in the affair and was arrested and imprisoned. The Sutherland Papers contain John Punter’s confession, detailing events surrounding the elopement, and also his petition pleading for ‘mercie’ and ‘pittie’ from Lord Cobham.
