Who made donations to the scheme?

Description:The Morning Post for March 5th 1877 prints the names of the Committee and a list of subscibers who had donated money to the fund so far. It states that the donations had been made ‘in consequences of the great sickness and suffering among the Turkish soldiers, caused by the severity of the winter, the want of shelter, and the consequent exposure to which they are subjected.’

The list of subscribers indicates that a wide range of people donated money to the scheme. Many subscribers are named, however others are referred to anonymously as just ‘An English Lady’ with the amount of the donation indicated. Many soldiers gave money to the scheme. Amongst the list of subscribers is Colonel de Horsey, Grenadier Guards who gave £5. There is also a subscription ‘From a few of the 99th (Duke of Edinburgh’s) Reg. per Colonel Dunne’. The amounts given ranged from £5 to much larger amounts including a donation from the Marquis of Abergaveny of £25.00 and an even larger donation from Sir Albert Sassoon amounting to £50.00.

Indeed, in an article accompanying the original appeal, it is stated that ‘Lord Blantyre has expressed his intention of contributing one thousand pounds which will supply four thousand woollen jerseys’.
