Date:1824

Description:The Housemaid and Butler at West Hill were housed on the basement floor of the mansion house. The inventory of furniture in the Housemaid’s Room includes two ‘copper tea kettles’, a mahogany chair, a dresser and table and ‘a piece of old carpet’. A Japanned coal scuttle served the fireplace in the room which also included a dresser with a sink. Compared with the Drawing Room and Breakfast Room, the Housemaid’s Room appears to have been decorated functionally, with a ‘folding clothes horse’ and ‘warming pans’. The Scullery adjoined the Housemaid’s room, again emphasising the functionality of her living quarters.
