Description:The Sutherland Papers include a survey of Mickle House farm made in 1820. The numbers listed in the survey relate directly to the numbered sections on the plan of Mickle House from 1820.

The survey tells us about the type of land at the farm and what each area of land was used for in 1820 and 1821.

Like the plan, the survey names John Brett as the tenant of Mickle House Farm which included moor and meadow land used for pasture, potatoes, turnips and wheat. Fields, including ‘Turnpike Field’ were used for growing oats, barley and wheat and ‘Near Barn Field’ was used to grow part oars and part beans. In 1821 the same field was planted with seeds, whereas ‘Wet Leasow’ which had been used for seeds in 1820 was left for fallow in 1821.

These fascinating documents tell us a great deal about Mickle House Farm and agriculture in Stone in the early nineteenth century.
