Date:31st of March 1719

Description:George Cookes of Stone wrote to Isaac Brisbane of Trentham on 31st March 1719 concerning the number of cattle that had been purchased from Trentham.

Cookes refers to a visit to Stone and a letter from Mr. George Plaxton informing Cookes that too many cattle had been bought for Trentham Hall ‘without direct order’.

Cookes tells Brisbane that the incident had caused anger to Lady Leveson-Gower, as the Leveson-Gower family did not ‘designe to bee downe’ at Trentham until June. Therefore the purchase of cattle had been wasteful and unnecessary.

The letter was intended to ‘prevent’ Brisbane from ‘goeing to Leek’ and instruct him ‘to come to Stone’ to consider the situation.
