Description:Amongst Duchess Millicent's papers are many examples of her correspondence with royalty throughout the early and mid twentieth century.

Several of the letters are responses to letters sent by the Duchess offering sympathy following a bereavement. In a letter dated March 1916 written from Prince Edward at Buckingham Palace is addressed to the Duchess at her No.9 Red Cross Hospital in France.

In the letter Prince Edward thanks Duchess Millicent for sending him a telegram to inform him of the death of a close friend at her hospital. This letter, like many others in the Sutherland Papers reflects Duchess Millicent's high social profile and her warmth and empathy.

Owing to the prominent social position of Duchess Millicent, the Sutherland Papers include many letters and telegrams from Royal figures, both in Britain and abroad, including letters from Princess Victoria, King Edward VII, Queen Alexandra and an elaborately decorative collection of letters from Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany.
