Date:24th of January 1734
Description:Throughout the eighteenth century the Leveson-Gowers purchased property in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The Sutherland Collection contains many deeds and leases telling us about the type of property which was purchased and its location in Newcastle.
One of these documents is an Indenture which was made in January 1734 between John, Lord Gower and ‘William Williamson of Newcastle under Lyme in the County of Stafford’ who was a ‘Shoemaker’. The Indenture gave Lord Gower ‘actuall possession’ of a number of properties in Newcastle.
The document states that Williamson had ‘bargained and sold’ to Lord Gower ‘all that Mesuage Burgage or Tenement standing in Newcastle under Lyme’. The property was situated ‘in a Street there called the Penkull Street’, and was sold to Lord Gower with ‘all outbuildings stables gardens’ belonging to the properties and also ‘four dwelling houses or Tenements’ situated in ‘Fryar Lane’ in Newcastle. The Indenture also gave Lord Gower ‘a piece of building adjoyning’ to the properties which was ‘used for a Smithy’.
