Description:This bundle of documents contains a number of deeds which were made between the Leveson-Gower family and the Corporation of Newcastle-under-Lyme between 1715 and 1898. The deeds include terms which secure charitable distributions to poorer inhabitants in Newcastle.

One of these documents, dated 26th April 1715 is a bond which was made between Lady Katherine Gower and the ‘Mayor Bayliffe and Burgesses’ of Newcastle-under-Lyme ‘out of her respect and charitable disposicon given to the poor of the Burrough’.

The bond was made with the intention that ‘the sum[m]e of Twenty shillinges’, was to be ‘given and distributed in bread to the poor of the Burrough’ every year on the last day of August.
