Description:Sir Thomas Gower’s correspondence includes letters received from the 1st Earl of Bath and his wife Jane. A number of these letters refer to the birth of William Leveson-Gower (1636-1691) and his wife Jane’s first child. The letters suggest that the family were in eager anticipation waiting for the new baby. A letter from Jane, Countess of Bath, informs Sir Thomas that ‘I much long to do to aske you a hundared questions concerning my Daughter’, suggesting that William and Jane were residing near to Sir Thomas while she was expecting her baby. The Countess complains that ‘had she come up to have laine in with mee’ in London, ‘nothing shuld have keept mee in the country’. Lady Jane's concern for the well-being of her daughter and grandchild is evident when she adds at the end of the letter ‘I have ordared Nurse Fletchar to bring you sume things for my Daughter which I hope will bee with hir before she wants them’.
