Description:Documents in the Sutherland Collection show that the third Duke of Sutherland was frequently surrounded by distinguished figures. The Collection contains 57 visiting cards relating to his personal visit to America and Canada in 1881. During the trip the Duke was the recipient of a range of guests including the Vice President, Commisioner of Agriculture, the Secretary of the Navy, the Attorney General and Her ritannic Majesty's Council. For anyone with an interest in the activities of the Third Duke of Sutherland undertaken outside of Britain, these documents will provide very interesting reading material.

These pages have been researched and written by Emma Jones, a Work Placement Student from Wolverhampton Girls High School. Emma explored documents in the Sutherland Papers relating to the Third Duke of Sutherland's Foreign Travels during the late nineteenth century as part of her placement at Staffordshire Record Office.
