Description:The Sutherland Papers include a report produced by Mr. Lowndes entitled ‘Cases of Persons who Tendered their Votes for Gower & Macdonald and were Rejected’. The document details specific cases where people had their votes rejected, providing an insight into the grounds on which votes were rejected and the lives of people who were disqualified from casting votes in the Newcastle local elections.

The document tells us that people who were absent from Newcastle for over a year had their vote rejected. George Dishley had lived in Birmingham working as ‘a Cordwainer’ for over three years meaning that he was not permitted to vote in the Newcastle election.
