Date:1875

Description:In 1875 the Duke accompanied the Prince of Wales on his Official Visit to India.

Documents in the Sutherland Collection notably refer to the locations of Her Majesty's Indian Dominions, Agra and Benares. The purpose of such trips is described by The Times on 11th October 1875 as being to diffuse 'a spirit of kindliness and good will...among the various races forming her Majesty's subjects whatever may be their creed or their colour'.

Numerous Newspaper Cuttings from the time are available to be accessed in Scrapbooks in the Sutherland Collection.

These pages have been researched and written by Emma Jones, a Work Placement Student from Wolverhampton Girls High School. Emma explored documents in the Sutherland Papers relating to the Third Duke of Sutherland's Foreign Travels during the late nineteenth century as part of her placement at Staffordshire Record Office.
