Description:Many of the bills in the Election Accounts relate to payments owed to Public Houses. The bills tell us about the importance of local pubs in the Lichfield elections and the services provided by these facilities at this time.

A bill for money owed to a public house called the George lists expenses for ‘six Post Boys at the George attending with chaises round the Town on the Day of Election’ in June 1796. Other payments were owed for ‘Waiters at the George’ and a ‘Cook at the George’. The Post Boys, Waiters and Cook were set on to cater for the needs of the Gower-Anson Election Committee and the party's supporters during their election campaign. Local public houses were central venues for providing treats and entertainments for voters.
