Date:14th of November 1657

Description:A letter dated November 14th 1657 states ‘I received your kinde letter and both your kinde tokens which are exceeding good, your hare powder will be very welcome’. The letter reflects Richard’s good relationship with his sister.

Rachel writes ‘there is little news in the Towne, only the great weding at Court which was on Wednesday Last, and continues yett, the Lord Falconbridge with the Lady Mary will be next, all things concluded’.

In a further letter she comments on another wedding, noting ‘the Lady Alees Edgerton was married last weeke to the Earle of Carborough, she being his third wife & hee haveing diverse children’.

Rachel’s letters suggest that people living at this time, particularly people in wealthy families, were concerned about marriage settlements amongst their peers. Families at this time were preoccupied with the financial practicalities and advantages of marriage.
