Description:The Sutherland Papers contain a number of documents relating to the North Staffordshire Infirmary. George Granville Leveson-Gower (1758-1833), the second Marquis of Stafford, was patron of the hospital which served North Staffordshire people from 1812 onwards. A new Infirmary was built on land offered by Josiah Wedgwood in 1815, situated between Etruria Wharf and Cobridge.

In addition to Statutes of Government and minutes from annual meetings of the Infirmary’s governors, the Sutherland Papers contain a volume listing the names of patients who were nominated to the Infirmary by George Granville Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1786-1861), the second Duke of Sutherland, and his Estate Agent William Lewis. The small volume also contains letters from surgeons recommending patients to the hospital.

The second Duke of Sutherland was also involved with the South Staffordshire Infirmary. Documents in the Sutherland Papers reveal that the Duke made annual donations and recommended patients to this hospital as well.
