Description:Reminiscent of the 1824 Sale Papers for Melrose Hall, the Sutherland Papers contains ‘The Particulars and Conditions of Sale’ for ‘West Hill’ which is described as ‘A Noble Mansion’, formerly known as Melrose Hall.

In addition to the Mansion House itself, three hundred and ten acres of land were being offered for sale including ‘a beautiful conservatory, hot & green houses’ which were ‘large and very productive’. The ‘Gardener’s & Bailiff’s Residences and the Farm were also to be included in the auction.

The document shown above reveals that George Granville Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1786-1861), the second Duke of Sutherland, sold his estate at West Hill in 1842, after he had used the Mansion House as his Surrey residence for eighteen years.
