Description:The Sutherland Papers contain a wealth of vouchers for purchases made for the West Hill estate in the nineteenth century. A number of vouchers from August 1840 tell us about the products which local tradesmen were supplying to West Hill during this period.

James Dallett was a ‘Wax & Tallow Chandler’ and ‘Soap Maker’ based in Putney in Surrey. In August 1840 he was paid one hundred and twenty two pounds, fourteen shillings and ninepence by the Duke of Sutherland for soap and candles.

Dallett’s voucher provides a detailed list of the products which the Duke of Sutherland purchased for his Mansion House at West Hill. The list is dated from January 1840 through to August, and includes items such as ‘Mottled Soap’ and ‘Yellow Soap’, starch, soda and ‘Finest Wax’.

Other vouchers, many of which provide detailed lists of the products purchased for West Hill, include vouchers from plumbers, glaziers, ironmongers and masons.
