Description:Amongst papers relating to West Hill is a volume entitled ‘Inventory of the Elegant Furniture Farming Stock, Garden Implements and Tools etc the Property of the Most Noble Marquis of Stafford at his Mansion West Hill Wandsworth Surrey 1824’. The document indicates that George Granville Leveson-Gower (1758-1833), the Marquis of Stafford, purchased Melrose Hall when it was sold at auction in 1824. After making his purchase, the Marquis changed the name of the property from ‘Melrose Hall’ to ‘West Hill’, as the Mansion was situated in West Hill, Wandsworth.

The Inventory tells us about West Hill itself at the time which the Marquis of Stafford purchased the property in the 1820s. The document includes details of the rooms and the furniture which the house contained, revealing much about the lavish lifestyle of the Marquis at his mansion house in Surrey.
