Date:April 1893

Description:In April 1893 Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1851-1913), the fourth Duke of Sutherland, offered the Borough of Longton some land on which the Town Council could erect new municipal buildings. A number of letters sent to the Duke and between various officials of the Borough Corporation and Local Government Board tell us about the Duke’s offer and the practicalities of town planning in the late nineteenth century.
