Description:The Sutherland Collection contains an enormous number of documents relating to commercial culture in the early twentieth century. Amongst these papers are advertisement cards and leaflets from men's outfitters, many of which include samples of the materials used for gentleman's clothing.

One of these advertisements is from 'Henry White', who was a 'men's outfitter' from Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire. The advertisement for 'flannel suits and fancy vests' includes a number of material samples for 'suitings' and 'vestings' in a variety of colours 'cut and fashined in the most approved manner'. Henry White advertises his suits 'for business or pleasure', and the advertisement is illustrated with a photograph of a man wearing some of the 'smart clothes' produced by White. White's outfitters produced clothes for 'the Tall Man' and also for short, thin and 'stout' men. White's outfitters also produced 'flannel suits for business, tennis, or boating' and a 'choice range of fancy waistcoats'.
